Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group has awarded the contract to provide a full ophthalmology service at the Trust, commencing in February 2017.
Following on from a review of the way it Commissions Ophthalmology services, Barnsley CCG issued an invite to bid, to manage and operate ophthalmology services from February 2017. Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, took up this invite and prepared and presented a successful bid to the CCG and we subsequently awarded the contract to operate this service.
Whilst an ophthalmic service has been operating on the grounds of Barnsley Hospital, this service was a joint partnership that was managed by Rotherham Foundation Trust.
In securing this contract from the CCG, it will allow the Trust to expand our service offering to our patients of Barnsley and beyond.
This service will operate from the Trust premises and will provide a full range of surgical work and outpatient clinics for:
- Cataract conditions
- Glaucoma conditions
- Laser surgery
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – Wet and Dry
- Diabetic Macular Oedema (DMO)

We will also be operating a full paediatric ophthalmology service.
