Barnsley Hospital midwives are celebrating being shortlisted for a prestigious Royal Collage of Midwives (RCM) Award.

The hospital is shortlisted for the category of ‘Maternity Services of the Year’ and is up against The Ipswich Hospital and Powys Teaching Health Board.

Sue Gibson, Head of midwifery at Barnsley Hospital said: “It is a real honour to have been shortlisted for the title of the best maternity services in the country this year.”

Midwifery services in Barnsley have a higher than average normal delivery rate thanks to the range of innovative services offered to women thinking about having a baby, during pregnancy and while in labour.

These include drop in active birth sessions, out of hour’s clinics for working women, offering flu vaccines in antenatal clinics, an exercise referral scheme to Barnsley Premier Leisure and a Hypno birthing service.

Sue continues: “We constantly strive to give all women in Barnsley the support and services they need to have a healthy pregnancy and birth.

“Being short listed is a great tribute to all our hard working staff that go that extra mile to ensure that women and their families have the best experience possible while under our care.”

The RCM Award winners will be announced on January 24th 2012.
