From September 2017, people visiting the Emergency Department of Barnsley Hospital will be able to view a brand new video in the department aimed at keeping patients better informed.
The video was the brainchild of staff from across the Trust undertaking the Hospital’s internal ‘Talent Management Programme’ and aims to improve communication by providing up to date information about waiting times and explaining why people sometimes may have to wait to be seen longer than others.
As a Trust, we recognise that sometimes, waiting to be treated by a Doctor or Nurse can prove a frustrating experience when attending the Emergency Department, especially if waiting rooms appear to be empty.
What isn’t always clear is that there are always reasons for any delay in getting seen. For example, the Doctors and Nurses may be dealing with a patient brought in by ambulance who needs immediate care in the department’s resuscitation area and this wouldn’t be seen by patient’s attending via the waiting room. The video explains this and other reasons for our patients.
Director of Strategy and Business Development, Bob Kirton said: “This is a really great idea thought up by our staff who have witnessed the frustrations of people waiting in our Emergency Department. We want to help people better understand how our services work and why there might be delays. Above all, we want people to understand that we do not want to keep them waiting and we are always doing our upmost to see patients as quickly as possible.”
Deputy Director of Operations Ben Brewis said: “Continual communication with our patients at the time of their greatest need is something that we strive to improve on, especially in busy environments such as A&E. This is at the heart of the development of our patient information video. We hope that being able to communicate key information such as waiting times and just how busy we are will help to improve the experience that our patients receive whilst being treated in A&E.”
The video was funded by Friends of Barnsley Hospital and features staff from the hospitals’ emergency department. To access the video, please visit http://bit.ly/2hclwUl
