“We are delighted to be able to tell you that we have had our final report back from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and that we have been rated as ‘Good’ overall, on the CQC’s four point scale comprising the ratings of ‘Inadequate’, ‘Requires Improvement’, ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’.

In October, the CQC inspected four of our core service areas – Medical, Surgery, Paediatrics and Urgent and Emergency Care – and returned a month later as part of their new ‘Well-led’ inspection regime to assess our governance, processes and leadership at all levels.  Changes to our rating are based on these areas of focus and therefore the remaining areas remain unchanged since our previous inspection in 2015.

For us to have moved upwards to ‘Good’ from the 2015 rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ is a reflection of every single member of staff who works here, the care they provide. It is a real endorsement of our services and marker of our quality as an organisation.

We are incredibly proud of Barnsley Hospital and of our fantastic staff who make it what it is – we are a ‘Good’ rated NHS hospital and that is by no means the norm.   We know that we don’t always get everything right and this is why the CQC inspections are important; they help us to continue to improve and learn so the service you receive is the best it can be.
