Our assessment unit exists to improve the service and quality of care given to children and their families.

Its aim is to reduce unnecessary admissions by quickly assessing sick children who are referred to us through a variety of routes.  The assessment – which is carried out by senior paediatric staff – can often prevent the emotional distress that being admitted to hospital can bring.  It can also mean less disruption for families and their children.

Based on the children’s ward, it is both medically equipped to carry out appropriate assessments and decorated in a child-friendly manner with informal seating, a suitable play area and carers’ coffee room.

The unit is open Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm.
