Our newly renovated labour ward, Barnsley Birthing Centre, opened its doors to patients in May 2014.
The new seven bedded state-of-the-art facility takes the place of the old labour ward and opened its doors after a seven month renovation completed by building contractors, C.D. Potter & Sons.
Three of our seven birthing rooms contain birthing pools, as well as beds, giving most mums-to-be the option of having a water birth.
To make the patient’s experience as comfortable and relaxed as possible, each of the seven birthing rooms have décor in calming colours, adjustable mood lighting and an en-suite toilet and shower room.
As well as the seven birthing rooms our new centre includes a three bedded assessment unit, where midwives can assess pregnant women to establish whether they are ready to be taken through to a birthing room.
On entering the Women’s Services from outside please book in at the new reception area, antenatal clinic is now on the right as you enter and antenatal day unit is now on the left.
We also now have a dedicated room for bereaved parents, the Rainbow Room, where parents who have sadly lost their baby can spend precious time with their child. The Rainbow Room, which is supported by Barnsley Hospital Charity, is located away from the birthing rooms and has a sound proof door and walls to protect the privacy of the family.
Local award-winning author Joanne Harris MBE was our guest of honour at the official opening of Barnsley Birthing Centre which took place in June 2014. Joanne commented that our new unit was ‘spectacular, warm and welcoming’ and that it will make a ‘huge difference for patients’.
