The neonatal unit (or special care baby unit) provides care for premature and sick babies who are 26 weeks old and above.
We have 14 cots in total, two of which are for intensive care and three for high dependency. Intensive care can include assisting with ventilation of the baby and high dependency can include some assistance with breathing and nutrition. The nine special care cots are generally for babies who require some help with feeding but are able to be nursed in a cot.
The unit is also able to stabilise any baby with surgical problems, heart problems or if the baby has been born under 26 weeks. In these cases, the baby is stabilised and transferred to specialist neonatal units in Sheffield or Leeds. As soon as the babies are well enough, they return to our care.
