Aseptic services

Located within the pharmacy department is the Aseptic Services Suite. The suite is comprised of many sterile rooms that allow for the preparation and production of high risk medicines for the hospital.

Inside the suite, the air is bacterially filtered to ensure sterility and staff must change into sterilised coats, hats, and gloves before entering. Intravenous medications are put together in special preparation isolators to ensure sterility at all times. The medicines are then ready to administer by the nursing staff on the ward.

The high risk medicines that are prepared include individualised doses of intravenous chemotherapy that are provided for each patient who receives cancer treatment at the hospital. Intravenous nutrition is also provided for premature babies on the special care baby unit and for adult patients on ITU and other wards, where feeding orally is not an option.
