A recent expansion of Barnsley Hospital’s Physiotherapy team has delivered great results – specifically for Intensive Care patients. Innovations in the Physiotherapy team have improved patient experience and quality of care resulting in reduced length of stay on the wards after discharge from Intensive Care. The team recruited an additional Specialist Physiotherapist to enable them to work in a more flexible and focused manner. Having an increased presence on the Intensive Care Unit has enhanced the Multidisciplinary Team, working together more closely to develop patient treatment plans. The improved level of rehabilitation now provided in line with National Standards has resulted in patients leaving the Unit physically stronger. This is being measured using a recognised outcome measure. Patients also generated very positive feedback comments within a recent survey. Cath Mitchell, Critical Care Lead for Physiotherapy said “ I am extremely proud of the Physio team for their enthusiastic approach and commitment to this improvement in patient care and for the ongoing support from the wider ITU team”. Philippa Moreno, Physiotherapy In Patient Service Manager, said: “These outstanding results around patient rehabilitation have demonstrated the value of Physiotherapy in this specialist area and our patients of Barnsley are now receiving an outstanding level of care.
