Barnsley Hospital staff saddled up for the launch of their brand-new cycle hub, the tape cutting event officially opened the facility on 26th April 2022. Consultant from the Emergency Department Dr Tom Shaw performed the honours by cutting the green ribbon, and said: “this is a fantastic safe and secure facility exclusively for staff use. The new cycle hub will encourage more staff to leave their cars at home and cycle to work.”

The cycle hub features two-tier cycle racks to accommodate 32 bikes, 4 charging points for e-bikes, tyre pump, tools and a repair station.  In addition; electronic access control has been fitted which means staff can use the cycle hub without the need to register.

The cycle hub is linked to the Trust’s recently released Green Plan and commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2040. Tom Davidson the Trust’s Director of IT who helped cut the tape, and is a regular cyclist said: “the opening of the new Barnsley Hospital staff cycle hub is the latest demonstration of the Trust’s commitment to reducing our travel related environmental impact and improving air quality.  We are delighted to bring this new facility for our staff to be able to store their bikes safely and securely”.
