Barnsley Hospital has been shortlisted for a prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value in Healthcare Awards. The HSJ Awards recognise and reward outstanding efficiency and improvement by the NHS.
The hospital has been shortlisted in ‘the use of information technology to drive value in clinical services’ category for their work around the introduction of the innovative app ‘Perfect Ward’ at the hospital.
Perfect Ward is a smart phone application which provides an automated clinical inspection tool, enabling nursing staff to inspect and report on wards and other clinical departments via a handheld device.
Perfect Ward was introduced at the hospital in early 2016 and since then there has been significant improvements in the Trust’s ward inspection processes. As everything is done on smart phones and tablets via the app it makes the assessment process quick and easy to undertake, reduces the need of paper and frees up senior nursing time. The app makes clear the standards expected and provides instant, transparent feedback allowing quality improvements to made across the Trust very quickly.
Andrew Mooraby, Head of Nursing and Project Lead said: “We are absolutely delighted that we have been shortlisted for the HSJ Award. Perfect Ward has been a huge success which is down to the willingness of ward staff to take on board this new way of working. Everyone has been really supportive of the project and ward staff really seem to like Perfect Ward. The app is enabling us to continuously improve quality throughout the Trust.”
The shortlisted organisations will complete presentations and interviews to a specific judging panel made up of senior and influential figures from the health sector. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 24 May 2017.
