Urgent Care Physiotherapy

The urgent care therapy team compromises of physiotherapists and occupational therapists who specialise in the assessment of patients with acute medical needs.

Healthcare provided

The urgent care therapy team supports the emergency department to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.

The team specialise in assessing and treating patients who are medically fit for discharge but may require further support, to be able to manage at home.

The service runs from 8am to 6pm, 7 days a week. The urgent care therapy team cover A&E, major and minor Injuries, the Clinical Decisions Unit and the Acute Medical Unit.

The therapists will carry out an assessment based on your presenting condition. The therapist will then aim to offer advice to you and other healthcare professionals involved in your care. The team will highlight any need for referrals on to further services, in order to prevent readmission to hospital and improve quality of care. Due to the nature of emergency care, the team see a variety of conditions. These include:

  • falls
  • social problems
  • mobility problems
  • fractures
  • patients who are not coping at home
  • musculoskeletal injuries
  • acute onset of back pain

If on-going rehabilitation or services at home are necessary, then the team can refer to the following services:

  • inpatient rehabilitation
  • Hospital at Home
  • independent living at home service
  • social care

We also refer to:

  • community physiotherapy
  • assessment and rehabilitation therapy services (ARTS)
  • specialist community services
