The Specialist Palliative Care Team are based in Barnsley Hospital and provide support to patients and staff in all wards and departments.
The team provide care to patients with complex needs who have a diagnosis of cancer and/or an active, progressive life limiting illness.
What is Palliative Care?
Specialist palliative care is a term used to describe the practical and emotional support for patients and their families in the following ways:
- Focus on enhancing quality of life.
- Offer emotional, psychological, social and spiritual support with an emphasis on open, honest and sensitive communication.
- Provide information, advice and guidance on different treatment options available.
- Give specialist advice on uncontrolled or complicated symptoms, e.g. constipation, nausea, pain, breathlessness.
The team consists of four Macmillan cancer nurse specialists, one trainee palliative care cancer nurse specialist. There is also one Consultant and one speciality doctor. They work in conjunction with the consultant and the multi-professional teams whom have overall responsibility for treatment and care.
The service operates 7 days a week excluding bank holidays between 9-5.
