Pelvic and perinatal physiotherapy
The Pelvic and Perinatal Health Physiotherapy team at Barnsley Hospital are based in Physiotherapy Outpatients in the Assessment and Rehabiltation unit, in the Blue zone.

Pelvic health conditions
We treat in a 1:1 appointment include:
- stress urinary incontinence (leaking when coughing, sneezing or exercising)
- urge incontinence (needing to get to the toilet quickly and sometimes leaking beforehand)
- prolapse (heaviness or dragging in pelvic area)
- faecal or wind incontinence
- constipation
- difficulties emptying bowels
- vaginal pain and pelvic floor tension

Pregnancy related musculoskeletal conditions
We offer small group sessions or 1:1 appointments for:
- pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain (PGP), hip or back pain or sciatica
- pregnancy related carpal tunnel syndrome
- diastasis recti (separating of the tummy muscles)
- We also treat any of the above Pelvic Health conditions if pregnant or in the first year postnatal, as a 1:1 appointment
Postnatal referrals
We treat:
- Third or fourth degree tears- as a 1:1 appointment
- Those who have an assisted birth (forceps or ventouse), shoulder dystocia or an O/P birth- all invited to our small postnatal education group
- Those who have given birth to twins with a combined weight over 8lb 7oz
How do I get a referral?
If you are pregnant or in the first year postnatal with any of the above conditions your midwife or GP can refer, or you can refer yourself using our online form.

For all other conditions please contact your GP to enquire about referral to the appropriate team.
