The Pelvic and Perinatal Health Physiotherapy team at Barnsley Hospital are based in Physiotherapy Outpatients in the Assessment and Rehabiltation unit, in the Blue zone.

Pelvic health conditions

We offer 1:1 appointments for include:

  • stress urinary incontinence (leaking when coughing, sneezing or exercising)
  • urge incontinence (needing to get to the toilet quickly and sometimes leaking beforehand
  • prolapse (heaviness or dragging in pelvic area)
  • faecal or wind incontinence
  • constipation
  • difficulties emptying bowels
  • vaginal pain and pelvic floor tension
  • From 20 weeks pregnant we see women who have a first degree relative (mother or sister) who has incontinence or prolapse. Please refer yourself for a telephone appointment to help reduce your higher risk due to family history.

Pregnancy related musculoskeletal conditions

We offer small group sessions or 1:1 appointments for:

  • pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain (PGP), hip or back pain or sciatica
  • pregnancy related carpal tunnel syndrome
  • diastasis recti (separating of the tummy muscles)
  • We also treat any of the above Pelvic Health conditions if pregnant or in the first year postnatal, as a 1:1 appointment

Postnatal referrals

You should be automatically referred following the following birth type: forceps or ventouse, shoulder dystocia, O/P (back-to-back), or after twins with a combined weight of over 8lb 7oz. You may be invited to our small Postnatal education session.

If you have not heard anything by 6 weeks after your birth, please contact the Physiotherapy department

How do I get a referral?

If you are pregnant or in the first year postnatal with any of the above conditions your midwife or GP can refer, or you can refer yourself using our online form.

Self-refer to our Antenatal and Postnatal Physiotherapy service

For all other conditions please contact your GP to enquire about referral to the appropriate team.
