Look after your mental health

Look after your mental health

Needing surgery and visiting hospital can affect your mental health. Looking after your mind is just as important as your body.

The 5 ways to wellbeing

The 5 ways to wellbeing model can help you improve your mental health and wellbeing. This includes:

  • connecting with other people
  • being physically active
  • learning new skills
  • giving to others
  • paying attention to the present moment – mindfulness

If you are experiencing difficulties with your mental health you should speak to your GP. Your GP may refer you to an NHS mental health service called the single point of access team. You may be offered an assessment and, if appropriate, short-term support or a referral to other mental health services.

Visit Barnsley Council’s website to find out about the full range of mental health services in the borough.

You can also find advice on the NHS Every Mind Matters webpage.
