Children and young people Children and young people with learning disabilities have very specific needs different to that of an adult. A specific pathway will be developed for children and young people with learning disabilities admitted to hospital. The team and the Learning Disability Liaison Nurse provide help and assistance to children and young people with a learning disability or autism when they visit the hospitals. Barnsley Hospital aims to ensure that they move through the hospital system more smoothly making reasonable adjustments to their care. Barnsley Hospital also has a corporate play team who can assist with therapeutic interventions for children and young people undergoing procedures, making the experience of hospital as normal as possible for children. With younger children, play and interaction helps to alleviate the stresses of coming into hospital, whilst for teenagers it might be that by talking with them is the best way to help. You can contact the Learning Disability Liaison Nurse if you need further information or assistance.
