The adult learning disabilities specialist health services provide support for people with a learning disability living in Barnsley. The service supports people who have a diagnosed learning disability, which means they have been assessed by a psychologist as having an IQ below 70 and also have difficulties in social situations.

Kendray Hospital

Kendray Hospital provides a base for a range of services including assertive outreach team, criminal justice liaison team, early intervention team, mental health inpatient unit, memory service, neurological rehabilitation unit, physiotherapy in mental health, psychiatric intensive care unit, stroke rehabilitation unit, substance misuse inpatient service.

Barnsley Shared Lives

Barnsley Shared Lives is a service provided by individuals and families across Barnsley who want to offer a person with a learning disability a short break or longer term care in their home.

Barnsley Shared Lives Service can also support adults with a learning disability to access other services including day opportunities and outreach services. To qualify for the service you or the person that you care for must have a registered learning disability, be at least 18 or in transition, and have been assessed by the Community Learning Disability Team.  To contact the Community Learning Disability Team call (01226) 775377.

Children’s Disability Team (Social Work)

The Disabled Children’s Team is an integrated team made up of social workers, children’s community learning disability nurses and family support workers.  The team works to support children, young people, families and carers where a child has a disability or complex health needs from 0 – 18. The team also supports children in transition into Adult Services.  The social workers are involved in work with disabled children in care, safeguarding, court work, work with children in need and short breaks both Tier 2 and Tier 3. The children’s community learning disability nurses work with children with learning disabilities and/or autism and support with behaviour management, communication difficulties and social stories, anxieties and fears, structure and routine, relationships and feelings and emotions.  They also run the CYGNET parenting progremme.
