Our Emergency Department is very busy right now and some people are experiencing long waits. If you do not require emergency care, please use an alternative such as 111 online.
National charity Cavell is a place where nursing and midwifery professionals can turn to when health, relationships and finances cause stress.
The charity can offer help like a hardship fund, domestic abuse fund, signposting and referral. It also gives Cavell Star awards to those who go above and beyond. 94% of those supported in 2024 said Cavell’s help positively affected their mental health.
A team from Cavell visited Barnsley Hospital to meet our Cavell Star winners – and have a look round our wards. There were surprise Cavell Star presentations to Maria Cooper, Deputy Associate Director of Nursing, and the Vascular Access team. Our Workforce team also got an award. This team recruited 235 internationally educated nurses from 2021 to 2024.
Representatives from the charity - who travelled to Barnsley from Redditch - also heard emotional stories from our previous winners. Among them was Angela Taylor, who earned the award for caring for a young child who passed away after fighting complex medical needs.
Sarah Moppett, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and AHPS, said: “We have really enjoyed being partners with Cavell over the last year in terms of recognising nurses and midwives who have gone over and above, and in facilitating some of our staff to access hardship grants through the Cavell charity.”
