Our Emergency Department is very busy right now and some people are experiencing long waits. If you do not require emergency care, please use an alternative such as 111 online.
It’s Volunteers Week (2-8 June), when we celebrate and recognise the contributions of our fantastic volunteers. Running annually for over 40 years, the week highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK.
Here in Barnsley, our volunteers are invaluable to the hospital. We heard some of their amazing stories of service during a glittering evening at our recent Heart Awards - with our very own Janet Curry winning Volunteer of the Year. The award category recognises dedicated volunteers who have selflessly contributed their time, energy and skills.
Janet (pictured at the awards with Emma Parkes, Joint Director of Communications), is a volunteer at the outpatients coffee shop, She is celebrated for her kindness, respect, and dedication. Her friendly demeanour and positive interactions embody the Trust’s values of respect, dignity and compassion, brightening days and offering comfort to colleagues, patients, and visitors. Janet’s unwavering commitment makes her deeply appreciated.
Among our other volunteers named at the Heart Awards is Peter Whitaker. Peter goes above and beyond to reassure patients and the public. He works extra hours, suggests improvements, and supports his team. His enthusiasm, professionalism, and kindness make him a hugely valuable asset to the Trust.
In addition to his meet-and-greet role, he supports the pharmacy by delivering medications promptly to the wards, enabling patients to be discharged and recover at home.
Volunteer Tricia Cooper supports the ANPN ward every Thursday, assisting with tasks like breakfast rounds, pharmacy pickups, and discharge packs. Her teamwork, respect, and emotional support make her an invaluable asset, deserving recognition for her commitment to patient care and staff support.
Barnsley Hospital Volunteer Team also scooped the award for ‘Team Outstanding Achievement (Non-Clinical)’. The team’s roles range from assisting confused patients and serving meals to supporting pharmacy staff and working long hours in the coffee shop. They contribute ideas for improving services and work together to support each other.
These selfless individuals give up their time each week to enhance the hospital experience for all. Their tireless efforts ensure a positive environment for patients and staff, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere across the hospital. The volunteers play a crucial role in creating a positive experience for everyone and are essential to the hospital’s success. Their hard work and commitment make them a key part of what makes Barnsley Hospital a positive place. Thank you to all of you!
