A consultant gastroenterologist who works at Barnsley Hospital has visited Rwanda on a pioneering endoscopy training mission.
Dr Elmuhtady Said was awarded a prestigious £10,000 international grant to support the mission. Also a clinical lead for endoscopy, Dr Said is the current British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Zonal Lead for Sub–Saharan Africa.
Last month he travelled to Kigali, Rwanda, accompanied by a specialist team from Sheffield and Huddersfield hospitals. Together, they delivered an intensive three-day training programme designed to strengthen endoscopy expertise across the region.
The course covered essential endoscopy skills and included a dedicated ‘Training the Colonoscopy Trainer’ module, equipping participants not only with advanced technical ability but also with the tools to pass on these skills within their own institutions.
Delegates for the course included consultants and trainees representing four different African countries, ensuring that the impact of the initiative will extend well beyond Rwanda.
This mission reflects the BSG’s international commitment to advancing global gastroenterology standards and aligns with its strategic objective to support sustainable healthcare development in Sub–Saharan Africa.
Dr Said added: “For Barnsley’s local endoscopy unit, the initiative underscores its role as a leading partner in global training collaborations, enhancing its international reputation for excellence in education and clinical practice.”
