Acute Medical Physiotherapy

The Acute Medical Physiotherapy Team covers a seven day service of all general medical and respiratory wards in the hospital.

A physiotherapist assists a patient.

What do physiotherapists do?

The physiotherapists work alongside other therapists, such as occupational therapists and speech and language therapists and the intermediate care assessors. Together, they assess and treat patients on the ward with a variety of problems ranging from acute respiratory care to on-going rehabilitation or falls prevention as well as treatment after falls.

The physiotherapists work alongside all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the needs of the patient and service are met and we play a particularly beneficial role in discharge planning especially of complex patients.

The services we offer can broadly be separated into two main categories; respiratory care, and those requiring holistic mobility and rehabilitation care.

Patients requiring on-going therapy on leaving Barnsley Hospital may be referred onto the following services:

  • Intermediate Care
  • Hospital at Home
  • Community Physiotherapy
  • Assessment and Rehabilitation Therapy Services
  • Independent living at home service
  • Social services
