Needing surgery and visiting hospital can affect your mental health. Looking after your mind is just as important as your body, so its important to understand how your mental health may have been impacted.

There is evidence to show that the 5 ways to wellbeing model can help you improve your mental health and wellbeing. This includes:

  1. Connecting with other people
  2. Being physically active
  3. Learning new skills
  4. Giving to others
  5. Paying attention to the present moment – mindfulness

If you are experiencing difficulties with your mental health you should speak to your GP. Your GP may refer you to a NHS mental health service called the single point of access team. You may be offered an assessment and, if appropriate, short-term support or a referral to other mental health services. For more information see the single point of access team web page or speak to your GP about a referral.
