Children and Young People’s Diabetes Service

The Barnsley and Children’s Young Peoples Diabetes Specialist Team provides medical, nursing, dietetic and psychological care to over 150 children and young people (0 to 19 years of age) and their families who have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Consultant Led clinics are held on a Friday morning for children up to the age of 16 years old and on a Monday evening for Young Adults (16 to 19 years old).

The Barnsley and Children and Young People’s Diabetes Team consists of experienced paediatric diabetes consultants, paediatric diabetes nurses, specialist paediatric diabetes dietitians and a psychologist.

We work closely with children, young people and their families to help them achieve optimal diabetes management and to lead a healthy and happy life. We support children and their families to achieve optimal blood glucose control. Working closely with nurseries, schools and colleges to support our children and young adults through education.

We provide individualised care plans to enable children to gain diabetes self- management skills and independence for their future.

Education is provided on all aspects of diabetes management including:

  • blood glucose monitoring
  • carbohydrate counting
  • insulin injections and techniques
  • insulin pump therapy
  • advancing technology including closed loop insulin therapy
  • management of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia (low and high blood sugar)
  • illness and sick day rules
  • exercise management

Our service is also part of the 24 hour on-call service which aims to prevent hospital admissions by supporting children and families at home during times of illness.
