The Critical Care Rehabilitation team is made up of a number of members from the MDT (multi-disciplinary team) including:
- The lead Consultant
- The lead Nurse
- Rehabilitation Nurse Assistant
- Occupational Therapist
- CBT Therapist
The Critical Care Rehabilitation team work to support the physical and psychological recovery from critical illness.
The rehabilitation journey starts on the Critical Care unit and we then continue to support our patients when they step down to the ward. We also continue to support patients following discharge home in the form of follow up phone call, ICU follow up clinic with the Critical care consultant and the peer support group.
The team provide support patients with any needs they may have.
Physical problems can include
- Global weakness post Critical care admission
- Loss of muscle mass
- Lack of coordination and balance
Psychological problems can include
- Poor sleep
- Low mood and depression
- Reduced concentration
- Altered cognition
The psychological trauma of Critical care can manifest in many ways, if you have any concerns regarding yourself or a family member, whether it be from a recent Critical care admission or old Critical care admission please don’t hesitate to contact the team.

There are many ways hospital staff, family members and patients themselves can help to prevent and treat delirium
- Take medication accurately and review often.
- Pain control
- Orientate to environment
- Re-stablish pre-existing routines
- Cognitive stimulation
- Remove unnecessary Foley catheters and restraints
- Bring in familiar items from home and involve family
- Get enough sleep
- Exercise and participate
- Prevent constipation
- Stay hydrated
- Good nutrition
- Use hearing aids and Glasses

All ex-Critical Care patients welcome to attend our peer support sessions which are at:
The next sessions will run on:
28 September 6pm – 8pm
2 November 6pm – 8pm
14 December – 6pm – 8pm
Access to Room 3 on the first floor is level entry from the upper car park, or by lift from from the ground floor.
All patients will be encouraged to participate at one of these sessions. Details of when the sessions are will be shared with patients following their discharge.
No need to inform us if you are attending just turn up to which ever one is convenient for you.
