The hospital service is available from Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The hospital service is based in the out-patients department in the red zone.  Anyone can access the hospital service whether or not they are attending for an out-patient’s appointment or accompanying a friend or relative. Members of staff and anyone wishing to stop smoking or requiring information can drop in to the stop smoking office and speak to the hospital advisor.

The service provides weekly face to face support for the first 4 weeks of the quit programme and then on a fortnightly basis up to a period of 12 weeks. Vouchers for the supply of stop smoking medications will be issued by the advisor as appropriate and they can be taken to a local pharmacy to obtain the recommended products.  Each week the advisor will take a carbon monoxide reading to see how well the person is doing their quit attempt.

The service also offers telephone support. This can be accessed by calling Yorkshire Smokefree or by using the on-line chat facility on the service internet site.

The website provides an on-line quitting programme, videos of stop smoking medications, people’s experiences of giving up smoking together with useful tips and suggestions.

The advisor provides support on the wards during a patients stay.  Patients or staff can request a visit from the hospital advisor who will visit the ward and provide information as appropriate.  Arrangements for nicotine replacement therapy to assist with temporary abstinence can be arranged by the advisor.  On discharge from the hospital the service will contact the patient by phone and make arrangements for further support in the community if required.

The service also offers free training for hospital staff and will provide support information tailored to the different wards and departments.

Referrals from the wards or out-patients departments can be made directly to the service by phoning 01226 432423, voicemail is available on this line if the advisor is away from the office. Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.30pm.
