Orthopaedic Physiotherapy

Orthopaedic Physiotherapy specialises in the treatment of patients undergoing planned surgery (elective surgery) or those who are admitted to hospital due to a traumatic accident or incident.

A young person with a leg injury walks across a park, assisted by another person, wearing a leg brace and using crutches.

Healthcare provided

The inpatient orthopaedic physiotherapy team is located primarily on wards 33 and 34. The team also covers patients throughout the rest of the hospital who have been admitted with orthopaedic pathologies.

The aim of physiotherapy is to commence rehabilitation as soon as the patient is able. This is largely done via teaching patients, exercises and giving post-operative advice.

Our physiotherapy team provide pre-operative educational talks to patients who will be undergoing total knee replacement, and total hip replacement, on a weekly basis. The team offers The Enhanced Recovery Pathway for hip and knee replacements.

Patients requiring ongoing physiotherapy on leaving Barnsley Hospital may be referred onto the following services:

  • intermediate care and assessment team
  • community physiotherapy
  • outpatient physiotherapy
  • Hospital at Home
