Children and Young People’s Diabetes Service

The Barnsley Children and Young People’s Diabetes Team provides medical, nursing, dietetic and psychological support to children, young people (0-19 years of age) - and their families - who have diabetes.

The Barnsley Children and Young People’s Diabetes Team is a paediatric consultant, specialist paediatric diabetes nurses, specialist paediatric diabetes dietitians and a psychologist.

We work closely with children, young people and their families to help them achieve optimal diabetes management and to lead a healthy and happy life. We support children and their families to achieve optimal blood glucose control. Working closely with nurseries, schools and colleges to support our children and young adults through education.

We provide individualised care plans to enable children to gain diabetes self-management skills for their adult futures.

Education is provided on all aspects of diabetes management including:

  • blood glucose monitoring
  • carbohydrate counting
  • bolus advisors
  • insulin injections & techniques
  • insulin dose adjustment
  • management of exercise
  • hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose)
  • hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose)
  • illness and sick day rules
  • advancing technologies including insulin infusion pumps, flash glucose monitors and continuous glucose monitors

The team are part of the Children and Young People’s Yorkshire and Humber Diabetes Network. We are involved in national paediatric diabetes audit (NPDA), Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREM) and peer review, to ensure we provide a high quality, equitable service.
