Covid-19 testing

Information on PCR testing and antibody testing, in relation to Covid-19.

PCR tests

Viral transport swabs must be used. These are available from the laboratory (multiple manufacturers supplied at present). These must be sent to the laboratory ASAP - please store them in the fridge if unable to send them the same day.

PCR testing is performed in-house and the turnaround time is under 24 hours from receipt of the sample in the laboratory.

Urgent PCR testing can be performed in house using Abbott ID NOW.

Please do not ring the laboratory for results. They are available on ICE as soon as they are obtained from the analyser, or the results will be communicated to you by your healthcare provider

Antibody testing

There is restricted availability for this test as the test is for surveillance and research purposes only, at present.

Brown topped serum gel tubes should be used and sent to the laboratory within 8 hours of collection.

Testing is performed at Northern General Hospital with results being available 48 hours after sample receipt.
